Working in Australia as a doctor

Working in Australia as a doctor

Registration requirements for medical practice in Australia
English
English proficiency is one of the most important requirements for a doctor who wishes to register with the Australian Council of Physicians (ADC). The doctor must have a grade 7 on the IELTS test before filing the application. This degree must be obtained in each of the four forms (reading, writing, speaking, listening) of the IELTS academic test.

General Practitioner (GP)
With regard to a general practitioner who wishes to practice the medical profession in Australia, there are two specific ways to do so:

1. Normal route (passing the ADC test or meeting the direct registration requirements)
There are two types of doctors:
a. Doctors who have passed the Australian Council of Doctors (ADC) tests
B. Doctors who qualify directly for full and unconditional enrollment are graduates of medical schools in Australia or New Zealand after completing the post-graduate internship. Or doctors who have passed ADC tests after completing the required training period in Australia.

2. Area of need doctors

The Objective of the Area of Need Program
In general, there is a shortage of doctors licensed to practice the medical profession in Australia. This shortage was manifested in some states and cities where there is no large population density. Therefore, the Australian Government has decided to introduce the Area of Need program to attract physicians from abroad to work with conditional licensing in regions and states where doctors are most in need.

What is the meaning of needy areas?
Areas of need are areas in some Australian states where there is a severe shortage of doctors. These areas are usually identified by recruitment agents and state governments who have been unable to recruit doctors from within Australia in public or private hospitals.
Most doctors who are brought to Australia do work in areas of need until they pass ADC tests. To get work in one of these areas, your doctor must make sure that the area you want to work in is located in areas classified as (Areas of need).

No doubt the doctor needs to be licensed to practice medicine in one of these areas. Therefore, a conditional registration is usually granted until it meets all the requirements for full or unconditional registration. This conditional registration relates to the job and the territory in which it is located. It should be noted that in this case the doctor cannot benefit from this registration for another job in another area or hospital without re-applying for another conditional registration (another visa etc.) to be granted based on the new job.

A doctor who does not have the required practical experience must enter a general practitioner training program in Australia in order to obtain a Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP) Fellowship.
3-Year Alternative Program on Passing ADC Tests
This method is an alternative to passing ADC tests as it allows the assessment of the experience of a general practitioner who wishes to obtain permanent residence at the Royal Australian College of General Practitioner (RACGP).
Doctors are categorized into five groups based on postgraduate experience. The general practitioner is usually classified in one of the first to third groups.

The doctor should work in a rural village or area in Australia that has been classified as one of the areas with long-term deficiencies.
Therefore, the doctor needs to obtain a conditional registration to work in villages and rural areas for 5 years. Therefore, the doctor can work as a general practitioner anywhere in Australia after meeting the following:
1-Complete 5 years of work in a rural area
2. Obtain Royal Australian College of General Practitioners Fellowship with the possibility of assisting in the preparation of the tests scheduled for this (the type of assistance varies from state to state, depending on the amount of need for doctors in the rural area)
3. Fulfill all the conditions required by the state government
4. Obtain permanent residence in Australia
